*FREE MONDAY* Sun Splitter (record release) / HIDE / Bruce Lamont / DJ Andre Foisy
Sun Splitter is a psychedelic doom band with an early history stretching back over a decade. Ohio natives FRANK HAYS (guitars, drum programming) ANTHONY DUNN (vocals, electronics, loops) and JACOB ESSAK (guitars) set roots in the Bridgeport neighborhood and settled into the final incarnation of the band in 2008. After gaining a following based on their eardrum crushing live sets, they have released two official full-length albums to date and have recently finished composing and recording their latest album. Chicago’s HIDE is a new project from visual artist HEATHER GABEL on vocals and multi-instrumentalist SETH SHER (GA’AN, PSYCHIC STEEL, ZATH, OAKEATER) on pretty much everything else (and some vocals). Their fourth show ever was headlining our stage alongside Italy’s BE FOREST. way back in November, and they’ve continued to stir shit up around town with their dark, minimal mix of electronic, goth and industrial music. Last year they opened for Chicago’s pop-punk heroes ALKALINE TRIO on night two of the band’s Past Lives reunion and tonight they bring their gothic thunder to fill the needs of our cold, dead hearts. Our very own Bruce Lamont is taking a break from his many other projects – YAKUZA, CORRECTIONS HOUSE, BLOODIEST, LED ZEP 2, etc. – to return to our stage and open tonight’s Free Monday. LAMONT’s last LP, Feral Songs for the Epic Decline, out in 2011 via At A Loss was highlighted in SPIN‘s 20 Best Metal Albums of 2011. An “unholy army” of looped saxophones, guitars, electronics and vocals combine for what SPIN calls “a dissonant, ritualistic swirl of Middle Eastern scales, mystery slams, ghostly moans, snaking reed work and acoustic guitars… equal parts bustling and bleak.” Expect to hear new tunes, which LAMONT recently recorded in Chicago with acclaimed producer SANFORD PARKER. Speaking of bleakness, DJ ANDRE FOISY will be spinning all the dark & dirty vinyls you could hope for. Let’s start this year off right.
